Sister Sadie<\/em><\/strong> is a composition written by legendary jazz pianist and composer Horace Silver<\/strong><\/a> who left us with a lot of great music to listen to and to play with. I really enjoyed his music thru the years. I think Horace Silver<\/strong> was a master at writing efficient tunes and arrangements for small combos such as the jazz quintet format. <\/p>\n

This is tune is written in the common AABA form<\/strong>. The melody<\/strong> has a kind of gospel<\/strong> & blues<\/strong> flavor, played at a \u00ab\u00a0cookin’<\/em> \u00a0\u00bb up tempo<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Sister Sadie<\/strong><\/em> can be heard on Blowin’ the blues away<\/strong><\/a> (Blue Note<\/strong>, 1959). An album recorded with Blue Mitchell<\/strong><\/a> (tp), Junior Cook<\/strong><\/a> (ten sax), Gene Taylor<\/strong><\/a> (bass), and Louis Hayes<\/strong><\/a> (drums).<\/p>\n

Horace relates that when John<\/strong> Coltrane<\/strong> heard the group play this tune in Philadelphia, said to him, \u00a0\u00bb What’s the name of that ‘amen’ number<\/strong> you’re playing? \u00ab\u00a0<\/em> <\/p>\n
