Sister Sadie (EN.)

Sister Sadie is a composition written by legendary jazz pianist and composer Horace Silver who left us with a lot of great music to listen to and to play with. I really enjoyed his music thru the years. I think Horace Silver was a master at writing efficient tunes and arrangements for small combos such as the jazz quintet format.

This is tune is written in the common AABA form. The melody has a kind of gospel & blues flavor, played at a « cookin’  » up tempo.

Sister Sadie can be heard on Blowin’ the blues away (Blue Note, 1959). An album recorded with Blue Mitchell (tp), Junior Cook (ten sax), Gene Taylor (bass), and Louis Hayes (drums).

Horace relates that when John Coltrane heard the group play this tune in Philadelphia, said to him,  » What’s the name of that ‘amen’ number you’re playing? «
